Department of Urban and Regional Planning

The proposal for establishment and the take-off of Department of Urban and Regional Planning in the School of Environmental Studies Federal Polytechnic Damaturu were approved by the management of the Polytechnic in 2017. To facilitate the take-off of this department and ensure its smooth and sustainable growth, the management appointed Tpl. (Dr.) Solomon Ikpe, a Doctor of urban and regional planning, to co-ordinate the take-off of the department in the 2017/18 session. Receiving the letter of appointment dated 1-11-2017, Tpl. (Dr.) Ikpe appreciated the management for the appointment and promised to put in his best to ensure that the department takes off the same session and on sound footing. To facilitate the take-off of the department of urban and regional planning, the Department was given a temporary spaces (four offices, two classrooms) in the Department of Agriculture in the School of Science Technology while other academic space facilities were shared. The Pre-ND classes started.
The following introductory courses were considered comprehensive enough to introduce the students to basic planning at pre-ND i.e. URP 011: Basic Introduction to Planning and Design (BIPDI) and (BIPDII) for first and second semesters respectively.
To ensure a balanced development of the baby department, there will be planned growth for the academic activities from one level to another based on criteria such as
  1. proposed students population
  2. staff populations,
  3. Space and other academic facilities as the department grows and expands through a three year rolling plan.

The Department in conjunction with the school management was to work hard to secure approval by the resource visitation in 2018/19 session for the ND programme. This failed and the programme was suspended by the management to 2020/21 session.
