When the Institution was established in May 1993, the Department of General Studies was among the pioneer Departments created in the Polytechnic. It is principally a service Department that handles service courses offered by various Departments in the Polytechnic. Such service courses include Languages (English and French), Mathematics, Economics, Sociology, Psychology, Government, Citizenship Education, PHE, Geography, International Relations, and History among others.
Apart from the service courses the Department is equally running Part-Time programmes as follows:
- Diploma in Law (DL),
- Diploma in Library and Information Science (DLIS),
- Diploma in Mass Communication (DMC),

- and a proposal to mount Diploma in Humanitarian Studies (DHS) expected to begin 2020/2021 session.
Apart from the Part-Time programmes, the Department also runs Remedial Programme in Management related courses with the aim of remedying the deficiencies of candidates in their SSCE and as well to prepare them for JAMB and to be admitted into our various National Diploma (ND) Programmes.
