Department Of Accountancy

Accountancy

The department of accountancy started as the department of financial studies offering National Diploma (ND) in financial studies. Financial studies is a combination of accounting and finance majors insurance. It commenced with Pre-ND course in 1995/96 session. In 1996/97 the first set of National Diploma in Financial Studies started with the pioneer acting head of the department Mr. Luka M. Bambur with additional two Assistant Lecturers and two NYSC Staff. With the recommendation of ICAN the department by 2000 became the department of accounting and finance and there was National Diploma (ND) in Accountancy and National Diploma (ND) in Banking and Finance in the same department. In 2002, HND in Accountancy was introduced leading to the award of Higher National Diploma in Accountancy. Diploma courses are also run the department as consultancy. The department continued to run two courses until during the 2010/2011 session when the banking and finance became autonomous as the department of banking and finance, while accounting remains the department of Accountancy. The department since its inception had been running smoothly with good number of enrolment at both National Diploma and Higher National Diploma levels. Until the insurgency period precisely 2011 to 2013 a complete session was lost without graduation and intake. There was also a drop and even self withdrawal of students. As a result in 2014/2015 only eleven (11) students graduated with ND Accountancy out of fourteen students. The department during its operation for the past two decades still has its pioneer Lecturer in person of Isah Mohammed Damagum, one time Head of Department, Director of Consultancy and an outgoing Dean of the School of Management Science who served two terms. Since its inception the department lost only a lecturer due to accident which they were involved together with a Corper serving with the department on their way to supervise students on industrial attachment during the 2002/2003 session. The late lecturer was T.E.A Shinku. Among students there were only about three (3) cases of death recorded. Few staff have left for higher appointments elsewhere and there is a staff who just retired early last year on attaining the 65 years age limit.
